* My Review

It's a good thing for me, being the peaceful person that I am, to receive these delightful series of children's books from Pump Up Your Book Promo and The Cadence Group. I loved these stories immensely! I have always been a bird watcher myself, have placed bird feeders around my bird sanctuary near fountains of running water only to patiently await a finch's arrival. For those of you not familiar with Chickadees, author of Emily the Chickadee Carol Zelaya introduces the reader to a mommy bird and her nest of chicks. Originally the book describes this beautiful relationship with a little girl caring for her new friend Emily with bird seed and fresh water. The illustrations provided by Kristen Metcalf are gorgeous and heart warming to see the beauty of nature all around.

But it's not until the little girl receives such sad news of her family moving away that saying good by to her familiar nature visits from Emily changes everything. It is upon reading the third book of the series that one sees how the author so tenderly conveys the feelings of changes through the eyes of a child and her joy of embracing the reunion of her friend with Emily's return. I loved Carol's writings because this book is educational and inspirational in its simplicity! I especially love that Carol's book is a true story of discovering a small bird in nature that brings her abundant joy to observe and care for. How lovely this beautiful series is and I highly recommend it to you! 5/5 stars.

About the Author

Carol Zelaya discovered her love for nature while living amidst the streams and forests of Oregon. A poet and writer, Carol met Emily, a tiny creature who came to live near her. Carol wrote this book to share Emily's story in hopes of educating others about the precious gifts around us if we just take the time to notice.

Biography

Carol Zelaya was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. However, it wasn't until moving to Oregon that she discovered her true love for nature. Deer and birds were daily visitors, but it was one special little chickadee that inspired her to write. She named the bird Emily. Carol has written Emily's story in hopes of educating children about nature's precious gifts.

Donna McDine had the pleasure of interviewing Carol Zelaya, author of Emily the Chickadee. Carol says,

This is a true story that actually happened to me about seven years ago when a little chickadee bird repeatedly made her nest in the most unusual places like my flower box, flower pots and even the wreath on my front door. I realized in speaking to others that this was not normal chickadee behavior. I knew there was something special about her and that she must have felt safe with me. I named the bird Emily and wanted to share her story with others, especially children. I knew that if I learned so much from watching her, hopefully children would as well. Nature is a wonderful teacher!
